Weeks 3-4

Putting it Together

The wonderfully talented actors and actresses have been working on music, monologues and choreography. fro our show case in a few weeks.  Students have worked on choosing and memorizing monologues and staging their monologues. Students also have worked on writing monologues and presenting them for performance.  The students have been working on learning our three group songs. The students have chosen:

Freak Flag- Shrek- Celebrating Individuality

Revolting Children- Matilda - Self
Empowerment

Seize the Day- Newsies - Breaking Out from Constraints

Some students will be singing solo selections for performances. They have been working on learning their selections and will be presenting them this week.

We have been very lucky to bring in professional choreographer Meaghan Janovsky to help with choreography for our ensemble pieces. Mrs. Janovsky's energy and passion for dance was passed on to the students.  We discovered  that we have some dancers in the group. The love of music and dance is being shared and received.

Week #2

The students this week have selected their monologues that they would like to perform for their showcase.  In addition to choosing these monologues some students have selected songs from their musical theater repertoire that connects to their individuality and diversity.  Students will be working on their monologues on their own and will be bringing them into rehearsal to share what they have worked on to show the class.  While they  work on their monologues, the students will need to remember the following things:

  1. Rehearse the monologue as written
  2. Must bring their own emotions into the work
  3. Tell the story honestly
  4. Create an arc that tells the story

The students have been also working at being present in the moment on stage.  The students are moving away from demonstration and have moved towards to being authentic and in the moment.
As an ensemble the students have chosen pieces of music to perform as a group and have been rehearsing the music.

Spot Light on Me!!!

The drama and show choir have taken a huge down a road of creativity, collaboration, creativity and communication.  The students have decided to create a production piece that showcases their many talents and abilities.  From day one we told the students that our intention was to create a production that celebrates them as individuals.  We collaborated came up with the following driving question that will help us achieve our goal of creating a production that showcases this wonderful group of students.

Driving Question:

How do we as performers create a production for the community that celebrates our individuality and diversity?

Students will use monologues, poems, songs, dance pieces and ensemble musical performances to create a production that celebrates who they are as individuals.  From day one we have been working on the following practices and techniques:

- Stage directions
-movement on stage
- movement with purpose
-individual entrances and exits with intent
- vocal technique
-breathing
- diction
-body positioning
- active listening
-improvisation
-using imagination to tell a story
- creating moments on stage
- selecting works that speak to individuals

Students began the week by creating large silhouettes of themselves on black construction paper. Inside the silhouettes, the student wrote down inside their silhouettes, what makes them unique, special, an individual, different from others and why makes them different from others.  The students reflected and chose three traits or quantities that they wanted to use to fuel their choices from monologues, songs, dance pieces for performance.

This week we are working on rehearing theses monologues. The students also needed to find some ensemble musical performances that they want to perform as a show choir.  Mrs. Robideau and I are so excited to working on this project.
